Cheque bouncing is one of the most misunderstood topics in personal finance in India. There is widespread panic when a cheque is dishonoured — often fuelled by myths that circulate on social media and casual conversations. Let's separate fact from fiction.
Myth 1: "Any Cheque Bounce Will Immediately Ruin My CIBIL Score"
❌ MYTH
Reality: A cheque bounce by itself is not reported to CIBIL. Credit bureaus do not receive data about cheque clearances from banks. Only if the bounced cheque was for a loan EMI or credit card payment, and that payment remains unpaid, does a negative entry appear on your credit report.
If your cheque bounces but you immediately pay the amount via UPI or NEFT the same day, your CIBIL score is completely unaffected.
Myth 2: "Cheque Bounce for Technical Reasons Still Hurts My Score"
❌ MYTH
Reality: Cheques are sometimes returned for non-financial reasons — signature mismatch, overwriting, post-dating errors, or stale cheques (older than 3 months). These technical dishonours have zero impact on your CIBIL score. No payment has been missed; it's an administrative issue.
Myth 3: "Once Affected, My CIBIL Score Can Never Recover"
❌ MYTH
Reality: Credit scores are dynamic. While a missed EMI caused by a cheque bounce can drop your score significantly, consistent on-time payments for 12–18 months can restore most of the damage. The negative entry does stay on your report for 7 years, but its weight in the score calculation diminishes over time as positive entries accumulate.
Myth 4: "Cheque Bounce Is Not a Serious Legal Matter"
❌ MYTH
Reality: This is actually the opposite of the truth. Under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, cheque dishonour is a criminal offence in India. The payee can file a complaint within 30 days of the dishonour notice. The drawer can face:
- Imprisonment of up to 2 years
- A fine up to twice the cheque amount
- Both imprisonment and fine
