Errors on credit reports are more common than most people realise — wrong account statuses, payments marked missed when they were on time, accounts belonging to someone else. The CIBIL Chatbox is TransUnion CIBIL's official online dispute tool, allowing you to flag and track errors without lengthy phone calls or branch visits.
Common CIBIL Errors Worth Disputing
Wrong Account Status
e.g. Closed loan still showing as 'Active'
Incorrect Payment History
e.g. On-time EMI marked as 'Late'
Duplicate Account
e.g. Same loan appearing twice in the report
Wrong Personal Details
e.g. Incorrect PAN, DOB, or address
Unknown Account
e.g. Loan or credit card you never applied for
Wrong Outstanding Amount
e.g. Paid-off loan still showing balance
Step-by-Step: Using the CIBIL Chatbox to Dispute an Error
Get Your CIBIL Report
Download your full credit report. Review every account, payment history entry, and personal detail carefully. Note the exact account number and the nature of each error.
Access the CIBIL Chatbox
On the official portal, locate the Chatbox (usually in the bottom-right corner or under the 'Help' section). It is available 24/7 and handles dispute initiation, status tracking, and general queries.
Select 'Dispute a Report Entry'
In the chatbox menu, select the dispute option. You will be asked to specify whether the dispute relates to an account, a personal detail, an enquiry, or an identity issue. Select the appropriate category.
Enter the Dispute Details
Provide the specific account number or entry you are disputing, the nature of the error, and the correct information. Be precise — vague disputes take longer to resolve.
Upload Supporting Documents
Attach proof: bank statement showing payment, NOC from lender, closure certificate, or any other document that substantiates your claim. Upload clear, legible scans or photos.
Note Your Dispute Reference Number
After submission, you will receive a dispute reference number. Save this. Use the chatbox to track the status of your dispute using this number throughout the 30-day resolution period.
Follow Up with the Lender if Needed
CIBIL disputes work by contacting the lender who reported the information. Sometimes the lender needs additional documentation from you. Respond promptly to any lender requests to avoid delays.
If Your Dispute Is Rejected
CIBIL will reject a dispute if the lender confirms the information is accurate. In that case, contact the lender directly — not CIBIL — with your evidence. The lender must update their records if the error is genuine. If the lender is unresponsive, escalate to the RBI Banking Ombudsman or seek help from a professional credit advisor.
